Our Mission

Empowering every voice with access to high-quality, inclusive vocal music opportunities that support genre diversity, community enrichment, and well-being with excellence and joy in the Southern Tier of New York and beyond.

The Four Pillars of VEST

Rooted in the belief that every voice matters, VEST’s mission is carried forward through four core pillars: Access & Inclusion, Genre Diversity, Community Building, and Health & Wellness Research Partnerships. Together, these pillars ensure that every singer—regardless of age, background, ability, or financial means—has equitable access to high-quality ensemble singing. Through culturally responsive and genre-diverse programming, community partnerships across the Southern Tier and beyond, and collaboration with music cognition researchers, neurologists, and music therapists, VEST unites artistic excellence with social impact, advancing singing as both a creative and a healing practice.

  1. Access & Inclusion – Ensuring equitable access to high-quality vocal ensemble experiences for people of all ages, skill levels, musical backgrounds, and financial means.

  2. Genre Diversity – Celebrating and performing music across styles and cultures, guided by principles of culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogy.

  3. Community Building – Strengthening the Southern Tier through intergenerational connections and partnerships, with a long-term vision that includes programs such as dementia choirs, street choirs, and prison choirs.

  4. Health & Wellness Research Partnerships – Advancing the study of singing’s impact on mental, emotional, and neurological well-being through collaborations with music cognition researchers, neurologists, and music therapists.

Why We Exist

Mission in Action

Too many people have been told they’re not “good enough” to sing.
Too many communities lack access to inclusive, joyful music-making.
Too many voices are left out of the story.

We’re here to change that.

VEST removes barriers—financial, social, and educational—so that anyone who wants to sing, can.
We focus on belonging before perfection, process before polish, and people before product.

Celebrate the transformative power of ensemble singing

  • Provide opportunity to find the “right fit” ensemble for each singer

  • Build a brave, safe space grounded in dignity and respect

  • Support lifelong musical growth
